our approach
Our aim is to empower local communities to access resources, and have control over the decisions that determine their basic needs and human rights.
We do this by providing financial and technical support to local ‘not for profit’ and community-based organisations, with a particular focus on local capacity building.
Our actions are guided by existing research, and ongoing evaluation of our activities by community and our members.
strategy
In 2023 the Board finalised our strategy for the next five years.
This has been developed through much consultation with significant stakeholders, including our partnership coordinators, our advisors, our Board and our staff.
It sets what we see as an ambitious agenda to expand and deepen our impact and lays out the outcomes we are working for. We will measure our success across three dimensions – communities leading their development; improvements in individual & community wellbeing and broader societal and systems change to address structural inequalities and discrimination.
And as with everything indigo, the first thing we offer is respect.
guiding and operational principles
We work according to a set of clear Guiding Principles: community ownership, sustainability, transparency and gender equity.
We support local community-based organisations which are often overlooked by larger development agencies because they are too small or lack adequate connections to access international support. We see that new technologies or large amounts of money are often not appropriate or necessary.
justice for first nations
indigo foundation stands in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for Makarrata – “the coming together after a struggle” – through truth, justice, healing and agreement making, and supports the aims and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for substantive constitutional reform.
