Uplift

Madurai, Southern India
2012 - Current
Uplift provides support to families from marginalised groups living in dire circumstances in a slum area of the city of Madurai in southern India. Discrimination, unemployment, alcohol addiction and domestic violence create many challenges, especially for women and children living in this area.

Most of those leading Uplift’s activities have experienced disadvantage and discrimination themselves but have been able to improve their circumstances through education. They are now ‘giving back’ by supporting families in their community who seek their assistance.

Since 2012 indigo’s partnership with Uplift in India has continued to create a better life for many families that have been unable to break the cycle of poverty for generations. Through Uplift’s activities and ongoing support, many women and children have gained the confidence and courage they need to face daily challenges. And many women and young people have acquired qualifications and skills that have helped them obtain work.
