Program for Education and Awareness Building

Maduranthakam, Southern India
2007 - Current
Program for Education and Awareness Building (PEAB) is an education project that supports marginalised children in the district of Maduranthakam, a rural area near Chennai in southern India. The children are from Dalit families (formerly known as ‘untouchables’). Dalits in this area experience discrimination and most live in poverty.

Women, whose husbands are addicted to alcohol, often become the main breadwinners, relying on occasional and poorly paid farming work. They value PEAB and hope participation in the program will help their children to secure a better life. Through PEAB students are assisted to learn and also encouraged to understand and advocate for their rights. With modest resources, committed tutors, and strong community support, PEAB continues to improve school retention and success rates in State Board examinations. Indigo’s partnership with PEAB has given hundreds of students a chance to improve their life circumstances. Many now aspire to careers such as teachers, nurses, engineers, and business professionals. For Dalit children, such dreams were unimaginable just a generation ago.

Current Activities

indigo foundation has partnered with PEAB since 2006 and is currently supporting:

● Information technology classes
● An onsite VEC coordinator who oversees the operation of the study centres and maintains links with parents and the local council
● A social worker who arranges personal development and social awareness activities for the students as well as career guidance.
